Best enjoyed with good company

There’s something special about a recipe passed down through generations, and Grandma Barnes’ baked beans are exactly that. Warm, hearty, and full of rich, comforting flavour, they’ve been a staple on the trail for as long as we can remember. Slow-cooked to perfection, each bite carries a hint of sweetness, a touch of smokiness, and the unmistakable taste of home. Whether served around a campfire after a long day in the saddle (no Blazing Saddles reference intended), at summer ranch barbecues, or with family dinners, these beans are more than just a side dish—they’re a tradition, lovingly made and always shared.
Ingredients
White navy beans or pinto beans
1½ cups ketchup
1½ cups water
¼ cup molasses
1 large onion, chopped
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon salt
5–6 slices bacon, diced
1 cup brown sugar
Instructions
1. Soak the beans
Place beans in a large pot, cover with water, and soak overnight.
2. Cook the beans
The next day, drain and rinse. Add fresh cold water to cover the beans by about 2 inches. Stir in 1 teaspoon salt and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
3. Prep for baking
Drain and rinse the beans again. Your horse will thank you!
4. Combine ingredients
Transfer beans to an oven-safe pot. Add ketchup, water, molasses, chopped onion, dry mustard, salt, diced bacon, and brown sugar. Mix well.
5. Bake
Cover and bake at 350°F for 3 hours, or at 250°F for 5 hours.
Alternatively, cook in a slow cooker on low until thick and flavourful
A little sweet, a little smoky, and always made with love—just the way Grandma intended.
