Father daughter duo venturing off the beaten track on horseback. Ride Away with us!

James Ross

It was in the mid-May of 1983 when, with a fresh journalism degree in my back pocket, I hopped on a passenger train heading westward from Ontario to the Rockies and Banff. I arrived in the beautiful mountain town after a three-day cross-country journey. Dragging along a duffel filled with horse gear and clothes, I set off into town in search of work. My plan was to reward myself for my recently earned university degree with a summer of adventure – not knowing then, that summer would stretch to summer, and I would while away a whole decade working here as a cowboy and horse guide.

I arrived as a kid dreaming of horses – and left as a man. Horses have been a big part of my life ever since. After running a ranch in 100 Mile House, BC, I finally made my way back to Ontario – bringing along a wife and four children, but no horses. I got my horse fix by visiting and writing about dude ranches in Canada and the United States. Now, with my oldest, horse-loving daughter Kayla, we board horses locally and ride weekly.

The idea for Rides Away, a horse-lover’s Blog, came from our love of getting out on the trail. We invite you along for the ride – through profiles of horse outfits, ranch stories and horse-inspired tales.

Proud mom to my 1.5 year old daughter, Australian Shepherd owner, adventurer, and the daughter portion of Rides Away.

I started riding with my Dad at our family ranch in 100 Mile House, BC! We had 7 horses, 40 Siberian huskies (they ran a dogsledding business), chickens, cats, and pigs. We eventually moved to Ontario where I took a 15 year hiatus from the horse world. We love to do adventures as a family and chose trail riding for a weekend - the smell of a ranch, the horses, and the sounds brought me back to my childhood and I knew I needed to get back into riding.

I now board my 15.3hh sorrel quarter horse, Major at Maple Lane in Bracebridge, Ontario and lead trails, compete in shows, participate in clinics and want to learn and improve as an overall western rider.

We want to inspire others to get out and Ride Away wherever that may take you!
